Brugsch, Heinr. Karl, Ägyptolog, geb. 18. Febr. 1827 zu Berlin, bereiste seit 1853 Ägypten, Persien, 1864 preuß. Konsul zu Kairo, 1868 Prof. in Göttingen, 1870-79 Direktor der École d'Égyptologie in Kairo, mit dem Rang eines Pascha, begleitete 1883 den Prinzen Friedrich Karl von Preußen auf einer Orientreise, 1885-86 Mitglied der deutschen Gesandtschaft in Teheran, seit 1886 in Berlin, gest. 9. Sept. 1894 in Charlottenburg. Hauptwerk: »Hieroglyphisch-demotisches Wörterbuch« (7 Bde., 1867-82); Selbstbiographie (1894).
